Casablanca and the Battle Over “As Time Goes By”
Lack of sleep, studio pressure, two alimonies, IRS trouble, and worsening eyesight were turning the genial, well-liked Steiner into a short-tempered man on the verge of a breakdown.
On July 11, 1941, it finally arrived.
Director Michael Curtiz and Casablanca
Success has many fathers and none more so than “Casablanca,” the most enduringly popular movie in cinema history.
Evolution of Holiday
Documentary producer Alex Gray remembers the impact of the original comic "Batman: The Long Halloween" and details the influence it has had on other artists and filmmakers.
Adam West, Gentleman Knight
When he entered that front door at Ralph Garman’s place, I could immediately tell Adam West was the man of that certain Hollywood generation where we can see that gentleman actor embedded deep in his spirit. Dressed impeccably in a suit yet without a tie and armed with that gentle demeanor he was every bit cordial as he was cool and immediately gregarious, equipped with his sharp wit, charm, and that infectious smile; I was spellbound and knew that all will be well with our project.
Ireland: My Dream Location
Working with and interviewing all of the amazing Irish filmmakers resulted in some amazing content of which I’m incredibly proud, but to use an Irish term, the “Craic” (hilarious good times) we had along the way was by far the best part of the experience. Put simply, IRELAND is my dream location for filming.
When Extras Change the Release Plans
When filmmaker Alex Gray informed studio executive Bonnie Spence that Frank Miller had agreed to participate it was a moment of mutual celebration. Bonnie recalls that Alex’s excitement was fever pitch. Now their hoped-for movie-length documentary was a real possibility. But they needed an increase in the budget.
When Extras Are More Than Extras
The documentary “Masterpiece” endures in large part because it is about the iconic “The Dark Knight Returns” graphic novel and its legendary creator Frank Miller. It was Frank Miller's vision (inspired by the work of Denny O’Neil, Neal Adams, Bob Kane, Bill Finger, and Jerry Robinson) that brought us the brooding, psychologically complex Bruce Wayne living in a world gone mad and filled with villains both subversive and deadly. This was a 180-degree turn from the comedic Batman TV series of the 1960s and it ushered in a new, darker vision of Batman that was expanded upon by subsequent writers and filmmakers.
For the Love of Batman
I recall the moment like it was yesterday, I was standing around “the quad” as they called the lunch and gathering area for the students at Thousand Oaks High School (CA) and a few of my friends mentioned something about this graphic novel called “Batman: The Dark Knight Returns”.
Supernatural…one of the last great TV box sets?
I can’t help but think that in this new age of streaming, where the longest-running Netflix comedy or drama is 91 episodes (Orange Is The New Black), Supernatural: The Complete Series may be one of the last great TV on DVD and Blu-ray box sets.
