A Career in Classic Film Marketing

George Feltenstein has spent a career marketing classic Hollywood films first in the VHS era, then DVD, then Blu-ray, and more recently in streaming and made on-demand with the Warner Archives.  He is a visionary of the catalog business, having developed the first anniversary releases and the brand marketing of boxsets around directors and actors or genres.   As a producer of award-winning documentaries, he understands the important role of extras and the fans’ desire to know more of the behind-the-scenes stories of their favorite films.  And his collaboration with experts in film preservation supports his goal of expanding the breadth of classic films made available to collectors.

Unfortunately, I rarely had the opportunity to work directly with George during my 13 years at Warner Home Video.  However, I was tremendously impacted by his knowledge of film history and his passion for the classic film market.  And whenever I was lucky enough to work with George, I gleaned any knowledge I could from listening to him speak about the classic film collector.  George truly knows and serves this fan base because he is a classic film fan.  He also knows this is show business, and he has adeptly changed with the technological advances over the years to ensure the studio can continue to profitably put out a robust release schedule.

When I was first exploring creating a podcast back in 2017, I emailed George and asked if I could talk to him about the Warner Archives podcast that he was producing.  He met with me and offered to help in any way possible.  George is a generous spirit and I never forgot his kindness.  So when I launched The Extras, I asked George if he would be a guest.  He was gracious in his acceptance, and we had a wonderful time recording the podcast.  What I originally thought would be about an hour recording, turned into a three-hour marathon discussion about his career and some of the most beloved Hollywood classic films that he has had the privilege to work on.  I have divided the conversation into three one-hour episodes packed with insights and stories about his career in marketing, some of the most important films he worked on and the friendships he developed along the way, and the unique extras he helped produce for these releases.  I hope you enjoy these episodes as much as I did in recording them.
